Air Source Heat Pumps

Air Source Heat Pumps

ENERGY-EFFICIENT HEATING & COOLING FOR YOUR HOME

Air source heat pumps are efficient and environmentally friendly. They can reduce your electric heating costs by up to 30% and help you save energy and money for years to come.

In heating mode, an air source heat pump uses energy to move heat from the outdoor air into your home, making it warmer. In cooling mode, it works in reverse by moving heat from inside your home to the outdoor air.

We offer rebates to make your upgrade easier and more affordable.

DOES YOUR PROJECT QUALIFY?

  • Your heat pump is replacing an existing electric furnace/boiler, electric baseboards, or natural gas heating system. Homeowners who are converting from fuel oil are also eligible for incentives.
  • Your heat pump is being installed in a residential property. New homes aren’t eligible.
  • Your contractor is registered with Efficiency Manitoba.
  • Your heat pump is being installed in your primary (not seasonal) residence.

Read the terms and conditions for full eligibility requirements. You can also check out our program guide for more information.

MAKE YOUR HOME AS ENERGY EFFICIENT AS POSSIBLE

We recommend making your home as energy efficient as possible before installing your heat pump. If you’re not sure where to start, a pre-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation can help you identify energy-saving opportunities that will reduce your heating and cooling load and allow your contractor to properly size your heat pump system. Be sure to check out our EnerGuide Home Evaluation Rebate to get a rebate once your pre-retrofit evaluation is completed.

STEPS TO PARTICIPATE

  1. CONTACT A REGISTERED CONTRACTOR

Find out if your project is eligible, then choose a registered contractor. We recommend browsing our list of registered contractors, getting several quotes, and checking references before making your choice.

  2. INSTALL A QUALIFYING COLD CLIMATE AIR SOURCE HEAT PUMP

Your contractor is responsible for obtaining all necessary permits and licenses and will then install your qualifying cold climate air source heat pump.

  3. GET A REBATE

Once your air source heat pump is installed and paid for, your contractor will submit the rebate application to us; this application must be submitted within 90 days of the installation date. Then, we’ll mail your rebate cheque to the address provided on the application. A post-verification inspection may be required to complete the rebate process.

Ground Source Heat Pumps

Ground Source Heat Pumps

Ground source heat pumps (GSHPs) are efficient and environmentally friendly. They can reduce your electric heating costs by up to 60%, protect you from the impacts of future heating costs, and help you save for years to come.

A GSHP circulates fluid through a loop of pipes buried underground. In heating mode, the fluid absorbs heat from the earth, which stays at a stable temperature regardless of the temperature above ground. In summer, the process is reversed, redistributing heat back into the ground.

REBATES

We offer rebates to make your upgrade easier and more affordable.

They’re calculated as being the lesser of:

  1. $2.50 per square foot heated by a ground source heat pump system
  2. $120 per MBH of installed heating capacity
  3. $120 per MBH of the building’s eligible base transmission and infiltration heating load.

Check out our program guide for more information.

How to Participate

  1. CHOOSE AN ACCREDITED CONTRACTOR & APPLY

First, find out if your project is eligible, then choose a registered contractor. We recommend browsing our list of registered contractors, getting several quotes, and checking references before making your choice. When comparing quotes, be sure to compare each contractors proposed design and pay attention to the loop sizing for ground loop systems. Once you’ve chosen a contractor, they’ll lead you through the application process and submit an application on your behalf. You’ll need to agree to the terms and conditions at this time.

Our list of ground source heat pump contractors are active members of the Manitoba Geothermal Energy Alliance (MGEA).

  2. GET APPROVAL FOR YOUR PROJECT

We’ll issue a written approval via email and from there, you’ll have one year to purchase and install your ground source heat pump. Be sure to receive approval before purchasing materials or starting any work.

  3. COMPLETE YOUR PROJECT

Once your heat pump is installed and operational, work with your contractor to submit the completion documents and all applicable permits and invoices. We’ll review these documents and then send you your rebate. We may contact you to schedule a post-installation inspection of your heat pump prior to issuing your rebate.

DO YOU QUALIFY?

  • Your heat pump is replacing an existing electric furnace/boiler, electric baseboards, or natural gas heating system. Homeowners who are converting from fuel oil or propane are also eligible for incentives.
  • Your heat pump is being installed in a single-detached residence or small business.
  • Your installer is registered with Efficiency Manitoba and accredited by the Manitoba Geothermal Energy Alliance.
  • New construction farm buildings may be eligible for incentives. Contact us for more details.

Energy Efficiency Education Program

GENERATION E

This generation cares about saving energy

Today’s youth are more environmentally conscious than any generation before them. They know that collectively, their individual actions can make a big impact.

This generation of students will transform the way we think about energy and sustainability. That’s why we offer an initiative for teachers and students — Generation E. We provide classroom-friendly resources, hands-on activities, and lesson plans that teachers can use to help their students understand their energy use and empower youth to create change among their family, friends, and community.

Designed for students & teachers

We offer resources for multiple age groups on the Generation E website

  • Kindergarten to Grade 5: activity books, colouring pages, and other resources to explain what energy is and why it’s important to use less of it
  • Grade 6: learning sheets, games, and group activities to help introduce students to the concept of energy efficiency and identify ways to save energy
  • Grade 9: assignments that encourage independent learning, like cost-benefit calculations and a home energy review, to help students better understand their energy use and how to create more energy-efficient spaces

Over time, we’ll expand the Generation E initiative to offer more educational resources for more age groups.

GET YOUR CLASS INVOLVED

We’re here to help teachers bring up-to-date and engaging information about energy efficiency into their classrooms. If you’re a K-12 teacher and are interested in getting your classroom involved in the Generation E movement, visit the Generation E website or get in touch by emailing us. Our team will help you access the resources, lesson plans, and presentations you need to empower and educate your students. Our Outreach and Engagement Coordinator is also available to come to your classroom to give a free presentation in French or English.

ARE YOU A PARENT?

We encourage you to have conversations about energy efficiency with the children in your life. This can be as simple as explaining what energy efficiency is about — using less energy to do the same job and getting the same or a better result — and discussing the negative consequences of not using energy efficiently, like energy waste, higher energy bills, and climate change.

Need some ideas? This checklist has some easy tips to help the young people in your life start saving energy. If you want to get your student involved in Generation E, tell their teacher about the initiative and ask them to contact us at hello@generation-e.ca for more information.

In-Suite Efficiency Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

IN-SUITE ENERGY EFFICIENCY PROGRAM

Here are some answers to common questions about our In-Suite Energy Efficiency Program:

My building has already participated in Manitoba Hydro’s Water & Energy Saver Program (or Lighting Program for MURBs or Affordable Energy Program for MURBs). Can my building still participate in the program?

Yes, your building is eligible for our new In-Suite Energy Efficiency Program. However, you’d only be eligible to receive energy-efficient devices that weren’t already installed in your building’s suites. For example, if energy-efficient showerheads are already installed and in working order, we wouldn’t replace them with new energy-efficient showerheads.

Can new buildings participate in the program?

Unfortunately, new buildings aren’t eligible to participate. The In-Suite Energy Efficiency Program is designed as a full-service retrofit program, tailored to meet the needs of existing buildings. Buildings must be occupied for a minimum of 36 months prior to applying.

I’m a tenant in an apartment building. How do I participate in the program?

The In-Suite Energy Efficiency Program is delivered at the building level, and your property manager or owner must apply on behalf of the entire building for all suites. We recommend getting in touch with your building’s property manager or owner to let them know about this opportunity.

I’m the owner of a duplex (or triplex). Can my duplex (or triplex) participate in the program?

Unfortunately, buildings must have four or more suites in order to qualify for the In-Suite Energy Efficiency Program. For buildings with less than four suites, check out our residential offers.

Can you ship the products to me so I can install them in the suites myself?

Unfortunately, no. The In-Suite Energy Efficiency Program is a full-service program, meaning our service provider CLEAResult will supply and install the products for you.

Basic Upgrade items are installed by CLEAResult technicians. Premium Upgrade items (smart thermostats and advanced HRV controls) are installed by one of CLEAResult’s subcontracted certified electricians. Having the Premium Upgrade products installed by an electrician ensures they’re programmed correctly in order to save you the most energy!

Is there warranty on these products?

Yes, all products offered through the In-Suite Energy Efficiency Program come with warranty. There’s a 90-day warranty on all services and installations and additional 10-year product warranty on showerheads and aerators and a 5-year product warranty on LED bulbs.

I just participated in the program and some of the showerheads and/or aerators are leaking. What should I do?

We’re sorry to hear you’re having issues! Please call CLEAResult at 1-877-326-3488 to remedy this issue. If your products were installed within the last 90 days, they’ll send a technician out to see what’s going on. If your products were installed more than 90 days ago but within the 10-year warranty period, your product may be defective and you may be eligible for a replacement product through warranty.

Can I use my own electrician to install the Premium Upgrades?

Unfortunately, no. Premium Upgrade installations are arranged by CLEAResult and installed by one of their local subcontracted certified electricians.

Are bulk-metered and sub-metered buildings eligible to participate in the program?

Yes, bulk or sub-metered buildings are eligible for the In-Suite Energy Efficiency Program.

Bioenergy

Bioenergy

Bioenergy is a unique and renewable energy source that can reduce your energy bills and provide other environmental benefits.

We provide financial assistance for pre-project studies and financial incentives for the implementation of commercial scale bioenergy systems that demonstrate natural gas or electricity savings.*

We’ll consider the use of any organic matter, including wood chips and pellets, as the biomass fuel. Only commercial, agricultural, and industrial projects that demonstrate natural gas or electricity savings will be considered, either through offsetting space, water, or process heating energy consumption or generating electricity to be used on site. Bioenergy can also be a useful way to address your waste disposal requirements if that organic waste can be converted to energy.

*Minimum savings of 50,000 kWh or 20,000 m3 are required. For projects intending to offset space heating, the heated space must be more than 10,000 square feet.

STEPS TO PARTICIPATE

  1. COMPLETE THE PROJECT QUESTIONNAIRE

Help us determine eligibility by completing this questionnaire. You’ll be asked to provide details about your operations and the proposed project.

  2. DISCUSS NEXT STEPS

We’ll review your questionnaire and work with you to determine next steps.

    • If your project is expected to realize electricity or natural gas savings and you’ve identified the type, availability, cost of your biomass, and the equipment needed, you may qualify for a study incentive. If so, we’ll ask you to submit a feasibility study proposal that will examine the project economics and the expected energy and utility bill savings.

    • If you’ve already quantified the project economics, including energy savings, and no further studies are needed, you may qualify for an incentive. Based on the energy savings your bioenergy system is expected to produce, we’ll work with you to help you move through the incentive application process.
