Solar Rebates For Your Business

Solar Rebates For Your Business

We offer a rebate of $0.75 per direct current (DC) watt installed on buildings connected to Manitoba Hydro’s grid.

Rebates are available for all solar photovoltaic (PV) systems sized appropriately to offset your building’s annual electricity consumption. All commercial solar PV systems will require approval from Efficiency Manitoba before starting any work, including prior to purchasing or installing any portion of the solar PV system.

BENEFITS OF A SOLAR PV SYSTEM

There are many benefits to installing a solar PV system.

  • It provides energy to your business in a sustainable manner.
  • It helps reduce your monthly energy bill.
  • It mitigates the impact of future rate increases.

DO YOU QUALIFY?

  • Your building has its own meter and an active Manitoba Hydro account billed at a commercial general service electricity rate.
  • You must receive pre-approval from Efficiency Manitoba before starting any work, including prior to purchasing or installing any portion of the solar PV system.
  • You’re the building owner or designated representative of the building.
  • Your contractor is registered with Efficiency Manitoba.
  • Your solar PV system is new (not a replacement) and purchased in Canada.
  • Your solar PV equipment and its components are certified by an approved certification organization as required by the Authorities Having Jurisdiction.
  • All work meets the Manitoba Electrical Code and any applicable local laws and regulations.
  • Your solar PV system is designed by a person with the credentials as required by the Authorities Having Jurisdiction and installed by a registered contractor who holds an Electrical Contractor’s License.
  • New buildings and building additions must also participate in Efficiency Manitoba’s New Building Program.

PROJECTS THAT AREN’T ELIGIBLE

  • Seasonal buildings
  • Buildings with existing solar PV systems
  • Portable or temporary structures
  • Solar PV systems designed primarily to sell excess electricity back to the grid

Steps to Participate

  1. CHECK TO SEE IF YOU AND YOUR PROJECT ARE ELIGIBLE

Read the eligibility requirements and the terms and conditions to see if you qualify for a rebate.

Before installing solar, you should consider if your business is as energy efficient as possible. Improving the energy efficiency of your business can be a cost effective first step that reduces the size of solar PV system required to meet your electricity needs.

  2. CHOOSE A REGISTERED EFFICIENCY MANITOBA CONTRACTOR

Your contractor must be registered with Efficiency Manitoba. We recommend browsing our list of registered suppliers, getting several quotes, and checking references before making your choice. Be sure to compare the proposed design of each contractor; pay attention to the costs and post-installation services. If your preferred contractor isn’t a registered Efficiency Manitoba supplier, we can help them join our supplier network.

  3. APPLY FOR PERMITS & APPROVALS

Grid-connected solar PV system installations must comply with Manitoba Hydro’s interconnection requirements and be approved by Manitoba Hydro before starting any work. Work with your solar contractor to submit an application and the required documentation to receive interconnection approval from Manitoba Hydro. To learn more about grid-connected solar PV systems in Manitoba, visit Manitoba Hydro’s website. It’s also a good time to obtain any necessary permits and ensure your system complies with any municipal building code requirements.

  4. SUBMIT AN APPLICATION

Once you have received interconnection approval from Manitoba Hydro and a project quote from your contractor, apply for project approval with Efficiency Manitoba before you purchase or install your new solar PV system.

  5. GET APPROVAL FOR YOUR PROJECT

We’ll review your application and send your approval by email. Remember not to start any work before we approve your application.

  6. INSTALL YOUR SOLAR PV SYSTEM

You and your contractor can proceed with installing your new solar PV system. You’ll have 12 months to complete your project and submit completion documentation to be eligible for a rebate.

  7. SUBMIT COMPLETION DOCUMENTS

You and your contractor can submit the completion documents to Efficiency Manitoba. You’ll sign the completion declaration and submit all invoices to confirm the solar PV system is installed and operational.

  8. RECEIVE YOUR REBATE

We’ll review these documents and finalize your rebate. A post-installation verification may be required prior to finalizing your rebate.

Home Energy Retrofits

Home Energy Retrofits

COMPREHENSIVE HOME RENOVATION PROJECTS WITH DEEP ENERGY SAVINGS

If you’re planning an extensive home renovation that will significantly reduce your home’s energy usage, your project could qualify for rebates through our Home Energy Retrofits.

BENEFITS OF HOME ENERGY RETROFITS

There are many benefits to undertaking a home energy retrofit:

  • Significantly reduced energy bills and long-term cost savings
  • Improved occupant comfort and indoor air quality
  • Reduced maintenance costs and activities
  • Increased resilience to climate change
  • Reduced carbon footprint and environmental impact
  • Increased resale and property value

Each home is unique, so you’ll need to have an EnerGuide home evaluation completed by an energy advisor. They’ll identify energy-saving opportunities that are suitable for your home, and you’ll receive a recommended upgrade report to help plan your major retrofit and achieve substantial energy savings.

HOMEOWNER REBATE

You can receive a rebate of $75 per gigajoule (GJ) saved up to the typical new home GJ rating and $150 per GJ saved beyond the typical new home GJ rating.

Your rebate is based on your home’s total annual energy reduction achieved through your renovation project. Check out our rebate explainer for more information and to learn how to calculate your rebate.

Home Energy Retrofits includes rebates for all energy efficiency upgrades and provides a larger rebate than applying to individual programs, saving you time and money. Home Energy Retrofits can’t be combined with other Efficiency Manitoba offers for the same energy efficiency upgrades. This includes windows and doors, insulation, and heat pump upgrades (ground source heat pump upgrades being the exception).

EVEN MORE HELP IS AVAILABLE

We work in partnership with Manitoba Hydro to offer financing for energy efficiency upgrades. Qualifying homeowners may be eligible for financing to assist with the cost of home energy retrofits through Manitoba Hydro’s Home Energy Efficiency Loan

Air Source Heat Pumps

Air Source Heat Pumps

ENERGY-EFFICIENT HEATING & COOLING FOR YOUR HOME

An air source heat pump is an energy-efficient and eco-friendly system that delivers both heating and cooling in one unit. It provides year-round comfort while reducing energy use and lowering environmental impact.

In heating mode, an air source heat pump uses energy to move heat from the outdoor air into your home, making it warmer. In cooling mode, it works in reverse by moving heat from inside your home to the outdoor air.

We offer rebates to make your upgrade easier and more affordable.

DOES YOUR PROJECT QUALIFY?

  • Your heat pump retrofit is supplementing an electric resistance or natural gas heating system. Homeowners who are converting from propane or fuel oil are also eligible.
  • Your heat pump is being installed in a residential property. New homes aren’t eligible.
  • Your contractor is registered with Efficiency Manitoba.
  • Your heat pump is being installed in your primary (not seasonal) residence.

Read the terms and conditions for full eligibility requirements. You can also check out our program guide for more information.

MAKE YOUR HOME AS ENERGY EFFICIENT AS POSSIBLE

We recommend making your home as energy efficient as possible before installing your heat pump. If you’re not sure where to start, a pre-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation can help you identify energy-saving opportunities that will reduce your heating and cooling load and allow your contractor to properly size your heat pump system. Be sure to check out our EnerGuide Home Evaluation Rebate to get a rebate once your pre-retrofit evaluation is completed.

STEPS TO PARTICIPATE

  1. CONTACT A REGISTERED CONTRACTOR

Find out if your project is eligible, then choose a registered contractor. We recommend browsing our list of registered contractors, getting several quotes, and checking references before making your choice.

  2. INSTALL A QUALIFYING COLD CLIMATE AIR SOURCE HEAT PUMP

Your contractor is responsible for obtaining all necessary permits and licenses and will then install your qualifying cold climate air source heat pump.

  3. GET A REBATE

Once your air source heat pump is installed and paid for, your contractor will submit the rebate application to us; this application must be submitted within 90 days of the installation date. Then, we’ll mail your rebate cheque to the address provided on the application. A post-verification inspection may be required to complete the rebate process.

EVEN MORE HELP IS AVAILABLE

If you’re interested in financing your air source heat pump, you can apply for Manitoba Hydro’s Home Energy Efficiency Loan in addition to receiving a rebate from Efficiency Manitoba. Be sure to apply for financing before you start any work, including purchasing products.

Energy Efficiency Education Program

GENERATION E

This generation cares about saving energy

Today’s youth are more environmentally conscious than any generation before them. They know that collectively, their individual actions can make a big impact.

This generation of students will transform the way we think about energy and sustainability. That’s why we offer an initiative for teachers and students — Generation E. We provide classroom-friendly resources, hands-on activities, and lesson plans that teachers can use to help their students understand their energy use and empower youth to create change among their family, friends, and community.

Designed for students & teachers

We offer resources for multiple age groups on the Generation E website

  • Kindergarten to Grade 5: activity books, colouring pages, and other resources to explain what energy is and why it’s important to use less of it
  • Grade 6: learning sheets, games, and group activities to help introduce students to the concept of energy efficiency and identify ways to save energy
  • Grade 9: assignments that encourage independent learning, like cost-benefit calculations and a home energy review, to help students better understand their energy use and how to create more energy-efficient spaces

Over time, we’ll expand the Generation E initiative to offer more educational resources for more age groups.

GET YOUR CLASS INVOLVED

We’re here to help teachers bring up-to-date and engaging information about energy efficiency into their classrooms. If you’re a K-12 teacher and are interested in getting your classroom involved in the Generation E movement, visit the Generation E website or get in touch by emailing us. Our team will help you access the resources, lesson plans, and presentations you need to empower and educate your students. Our Outreach and Engagement Coordinator is also available to come to your classroom to give a free presentation in French or English.

ARE YOU A PARENT?

We encourage you to have conversations about energy efficiency with the children in your life. This can be as simple as explaining what energy efficiency is about — using less energy to do the same job and getting the same or a better result — and discussing the negative consequences of not using energy efficiently, like energy waste, higher energy bills, and climate change.

Need some ideas? This checklist has some easy tips to help the young people in your life start saving energy. If you want to get your student involved in Generation E, tell their teacher about the initiative and ask them to contact us at hello@generation-e.ca for more information.

In-Suite Efficiency Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

IN-SUITE ENERGY EFFICIENCY PROGRAM

Here are some answers to common questions about our In-Suite Energy Efficiency Program:

My building has already participated in Manitoba Hydro’s Water & Energy Saver Program (or Lighting Program for MURBs or Affordable Energy Program for MURBs). Can my building still participate in the program?

Yes, your building is eligible for our new In-Suite Energy Efficiency Program. However, you’d only be eligible to receive energy-efficient devices that weren’t already installed in your building’s suites. For example, if energy-efficient showerheads are already installed and in working order, we wouldn’t replace them with new energy-efficient showerheads.

Can new buildings participate in the program?

Unfortunately, new buildings aren’t eligible to participate. The In-Suite Energy Efficiency Program is designed as a full-service retrofit program, tailored to meet the needs of existing buildings. Buildings must be occupied for a minimum of 36 months prior to applying.

I’m a tenant in an apartment building. How do I participate in the program?

The In-Suite Energy Efficiency Program is delivered at the building level, and your property manager or owner must apply on behalf of the entire building for all suites. We recommend getting in touch with your building’s property manager or owner to let them know about this opportunity.

I’m the owner of a duplex (or triplex). Can my duplex (or triplex) participate in the program?

Unfortunately, buildings must have four or more suites in order to qualify for the In-Suite Energy Efficiency Program. For buildings with less than four suites, check out our residential offers.

Can you ship the products to me so I can install them in the suites myself?

Unfortunately, no. The In-Suite Energy Efficiency Program is a full-service program, meaning our service provider CLEAResult Canada will supply and install the products for you.

Basic Upgrade items are installed by CLEAResult Canada technicians. Premium Upgrade items (smart thermostats and advanced HRV controls) are installed by one of CLEAResult Canada’s subcontracted certified electricians. Having the Premium Upgrade products installed by an electrician ensures they’re programmed correctly in order to save you the most energy!

Is there warranty on these products?

Yes, all products offered through the In-Suite Energy Efficiency Program come with warranty. There’s a 90-day warranty on all services and installations and additional 10-year product warranty on showerheads and aerators and a 5-year product warranty on LED bulbs.

I just participated in the program and some of the showerheads and/or aerators are leaking. What should I do?

We’re sorry to hear you’re having issues! Please call CLEAResult Canada at 1-877-326-3488 to remedy this issue. If your products were installed within the last 90 days, they’ll send a technician out to see what’s going on. If your products were installed more than 90 days ago but within the 10-year warranty period, your product may be defective and you may be eligible for a replacement product through warranty.

Can I use my own electrician to install the Premium Upgrades?

Unfortunately, no. Premium Upgrade installations are arranged by CLEAResult Canada and installed by one of their local subcontracted certified electricians.

Are bulk-metered and sub-metered buildings eligible to participate in the program?

Yes, bulk or sub-metered buildings are eligible for the In-Suite Energy Efficiency Program.
