PRACTICAL WAYS TO GET YOUR HOME READY FOR WINTER
As the air turns crisp and the days grow shorter, Manitobans know winter isn’t far away. Now’s the perfect time to prepare your home for the colder months ahead. A few simple fixes can help you stay warm, improve comfort, and lower your energy bills.
“Fall is the best time to make small upgrades that have a big impact. When you get ahead of the cold, your home will be more comfortable, and you’ll see the savings on your next energy bill.”
— Ashley Nichol, Brand & Customer Strategy Lead

SERVICE YOUR HEAT SYSTEM
A well-maintained heating system operates more efficiently, uses less energy, and lasts longer. Schedule an annual service check to ensure it’s operating safely and effectively. Replace your furnace or air-handler filter every three months to maintain proper airflow and clean air; do the same if you have a heat or energy recovery ventilator (HRV/ERV). Finally, remember to clear the outside fresh air intake and exhaust vents to keep your system running smoothly.
SEAL OUT DRAFTS
Even small gaps and cracks can allow warm air to escape and cold air to sneak in, making your heating system work harder. Seal gaps around windows, doors, baseboards, and electrical outlets with caulking or weatherstripping. These simple fixes make your home more comfortable and reduce heating costs.
ADJUST YOUR THERMOSTAT
For conventional heating systems like furnaces and boilers, lower your thermostat by 3°C or more for at least eight hours a day — such as overnight or while you’re away — to save on heating costs. Air and ground source heat pumps operate most efficiently with either no setback or only a minor setback of 1 to 2°C. Consider installing a smart thermostat to easily manage your home’s temperature and comfort.
MAKE THE MOST OF NATURAL HEAT
Open your blinds or curtains during the day to benefit from the sun’s warmth, then close them at night to keep heat in. Add window insulating kits to reduce cold drafts. Insulated curtains can also help improve comfort next to cold windows.
INSULATE FOR LONG-TERM COMFORT
Insulation is one of the best investments you can make for long-term energy savings. Add insulation to your attic, basement, crawlspace, or walls to help keep heat in your home.
“Energy efficiency isn’t just about saving money,” Ashley says. “It’s about feeling comfortable in your home and knowing you’re making a difference for the environment too.”
