Today, following tabling of reports in the Manitoba legislature, Efficiency Manitoba published their 2021/22 Annual Report and Annual Report Supplement, providing a detailed look at their accomplishments during their second year of operations. Reporting also includes financial statements along with independently verified and evaluated 2021/22 energy savings information.
Electric and natural gas energy savings were tabulated by independent assessor Econoler, as required by the Efficiency Manitoba Act. The verified results show that in Efficiency Manitoba’s second year of operations, net electricity savings of 265.3 gigawatt-hours (GWh) and net natural gas savings of 11.85 million cubic metres (m3) were achieved. This represents 77% of Efficiency Manitoba’s annual electric energy savings target and 93% of the annual natural gas savings target.
These energy savings were obtained with approximately 55% of Efficiency Manitoba’s budget, resulting in energy savings achieved more cost effectively than anticipated in the second year of their inaugural three-year efficiency plan.
While pandemic impacts continued through 2021/22, electric energy savings were approximately 17% higher than in 2020/21, while natural gas savings nearly reached the energy savings target for 2021/22 and significantly increased (by 69%) over savings achieved in 2020/21. The natural gas savings realized in 2021/22 also contributed to achieving 93% of planned greenhouse gas emissions reductions.
“Efficiency Manitoba has much to be proud of closing out the 2021/22 fiscal year,” said Dr. Jeannette Montufar, Chair of Efficiency Manitoba’s Board of Directors. “Having officially commenced on April 1, 2020 at the start of a global pandemic, this new organization has succeeded through extraordinary external events, alongside our fellow citizens. Efficiency Manitoba is well-poised to positively contribute to the province’s economic recovery. By being agile and adjusting programs as necessary, creating partnerships with communities, organizations, and the private sector, and making progress on key initiatives, we’re seeing a corresponding increase in customer participation, thereby leading to demonstrable energy savings results.”
At the conclusion of 2021/22, Efficiency Manitoba had over 35 programs and offers available to Manitobans for homes, businesses, and communities. Program enhancements and modifications were also made to directly respond to the pandemic and its associated impacts on customers and suppliers, with an intent to further enable participation and energy savings. Efficiency Manitoba also grew the number of private sector suppliers delivering energy efficiency programs to over 1,000, an over 40% increase relative to the year prior, thus supporting the creation, continuation, and expansion of local green jobs.
“Thank you to the Manitobans who have engaged with us so far. Your willingness to take on energy efficiency projects is critical to our collective work to make Manitoba increasingly more energy efficient,” said Colleen Kuruluk, Chief Executive Officer of Efficiency Manitoba. “This organization built by and for Manitobans focused on energy efficiency is a vital component in achieving provincial and national climate goals and targets. Whether you’re just starting to make energy-efficient choices or if you’ve seen and realized the value through more than one project—no matter where you are in Manitoba and on the energy efficiency journey, we’re here to help you save energy, money, and the environment.”
